In a tough economy where many are turning to cosmetic surgery to help “lift” their job prospects, more patients are turning to scaled-down versions of face lifts to get some of the results of the traditional procedure without the traditionally larger price tag. Facial liposuction is quickly growing in popularity with patients who want noticeable results but cannot commit to taking much time away from work for recovery.

“I think what we’re seeing now is a second wave of patients who have decided they aren’t going to wait on the economy to improve their appearance,” explains Dr. Andrew Salzberg. “We’ve seen a number of patients who decided to switch over to short-term, noninvasive treatments like injectables, but I think a lot of these patients now are taking a second look at their options and going for longer-term results that still fit their budget.”

To many of these women and men, facial liposuction seems like an ideal solution. “For the right patient, this procedure is a great alternative to the traditional face lift because it creates a few key adjustments without requiring patients to take a lot of time off of work to recover,” says Dr. Salzberg.

A face lift adjusts sagging muscle tissues, skin, and fat, but facial liposuction focuses instead on eliminating excess fat in areas like the lower face to ease signs of aging like wrinkles, jowls, and neck “wattles.” While facial liposuction is not as extensive as a face lift, it can often improve the lower face dramatically by tightening up the jaw line and minimizing some of the more noticeable wrinkles around the mouth.

“With a traditional face lift you get multiple levels of correction, and for many patients those changes will be more appropriate,” explains Dr. Salzberg. “For the right patient, though, the results of facial liposuction can be very impressive.”

Laser lipo is boasting many advantages over traditional method…

Laser Liposuction is a minimally invasive, cosmetic surgical procedure which combines traditional liposuction techniques with laser treatment. Compared to older or traditional liposuction methods, laser-assisted lipolysis is generally thought to be safer, easier and quicker, providing more precise body contouring along with a skin tightening effect and minimal downtime.

Laser liposuction can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including the abdomen, arms, back, buttocks, chin, flanks, hips, knees, male chest, neck, thighs and waist. The laser enables many more individuals to be treated who previously would have needed surgery along with liposuction, often due to loose skin. Smaller areas and contour deformities not suitable for treatment with traditional liposuction are ideal for treatment with laser liposuction due to the enhanced precision of the laser. Laser liposuction can also treat areas with little or no fat like the submental area, or the area beneath the chin, as well as areas which have previously been treated with liposuction for improvement of contour deformities and skin laxity. Individuals who cannot afford the lengthy recovery associated with other treatments will find laser liposuction to be a particularly appealing treatment due to the rapid recovery and minimal downtime.

Laser liposuction is most often performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia, thus eliminating the risks associated with general anesthesia. Each targeted area can typically be treated in less than one hour. During the procedure, a small cannula fitted with a single laser fiber is inserted through small incisions in the treatment area. Because the incisions are small, there are no visible scars. Once the cannula is inserted, the energy from the laser liquefies the fat cells which are then drained away. The laser provides an additional skin tightening effect for improved contour, and the precision of the laser also helps to preserve the surrounding tissue. This new approach to fat removal uses precisely controlled cooling of fat cells for removal without harming the surrounding skin or tissue. This technology can be used to safely remove fat cells near nerves, muscle and bone.

There is little downtime or recovery associated with laser liposuction and most patients are able to return to their normal routine and work within one to two days. Patients report less discomfort, bruising and swelling than with traditional liposuction. The results of laser liposuction are long-lasting with sensible diet and exercise.

(CNN) – ”Cankles” is slang for the part of the leg where the ankle meets the calf when there is no definition or indentation.

Why would someone be so self-conscious about a certain part of her body? “I have cankles — that’s all I can say,” Barbara Simone laments. “They are huge and they are horrible. … And I will never wear a skirt or dress again.”

Cankles? What are cankles? We’ve heard about saddle bags, muffin tops and love handles, but it seems that some women and men of the 21st century are now focused on the chubby joints of their lower extremities.

Far from being a medical term, “cankles” is slang for the part of the leg where the ankle meets the calf when there is no definition or indentation. In most cases, cankles are just large ankles — what used to be called “big bones.” But in society’s quest for all things thin and shapely, big-boned ankles have taken on a name — and a life — of their own.

According to podiatrists, the average ankle size is about 10 to 11 inches around; men’s ankles may be a little larger. The American Podiatric Medical Association does not recognize cankles as a medical problem, but according to Dr. Kathya Zinszer, a physician at Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine, cankles can be caused by all types of medical issues.

“Things like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular risks, sometimes just lymphedema,” says Zinszer. “All of those can lend themselves to deformed ankles or what people are [calling] cankles.” But Zinszer says that most cankles are “God-given.”

Zinszer has seen patients try to alter their cankles. Some people turn to ankle liposuction, which can cost anywhere between $4,000 to $8,000, depending on how extensive the ankle-shaping need is.

But Zinszer doesn’t recommend liposuction because it can do more damage than good. “The foot, the lower extremity, has a lot of neuromuscular structures,” she says, explaining that by removing some of the tissue, nerves and vasculature can be damaged, creating an even bigger problem.

There are exercises that can keep your ankles firm. However, they don’t always work. Jeff Timmons, a personal trainer from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, says he has clients who constantly complain about the size of their ankles. Many plead with him to help them shape their legs and give their ankles definition.

Although some exercises can make a little difference, he says, most cankles are stubborn and stay put because they’re part of a person’s anatomy. “Sure, if you’re heavy, you’re going to have heavy ankles, so losing weight will make a difference,” he says. “But to be honest, most of my clients who want to get rid of their cankles are already in pretty good shape.”

There is a big difference between Mesotherapy and Liposuction.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires incisions and the insertion in the patient’s body of metal probes that with a back and forth motion, causing significant trauma. Liposuction is suctioning out the fat cells, that will never return but if patients eat too many calories they will reaccumulate fat in other area where they never had fat before. The back, thighs, arm are frequent sites of new fat accumulation.

Mesotherapy works by disrupting the fat cell membranes, destroying the fat cell and releasing the fat to be metabolized and excreted in the same way it is processed when we loose weight with diet and exercise. (It is recommended that mesotherapy patients follow a reduced calorie diet during treatment to prevent the fat form being re-absorbed by other cells.)

(Read Lipodisolve: Mesotherapy horror posts.)

There are no abnormal sites of accumulation and it is more difficult to re-accumulate fat in the areas treated.

Although the costs could be similar, mesotherapy offers no down time and is much safer compared to any surgical intervention (liposuction). Be sure you go to a reputable medical spa for mesotherapy or lipodisolve and a plastic surgeon for liposuction.
