What’s a Skin Clinic?Medical spas & laser skin clinics are medical businesses that provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments and include laser clinics, medical spas and other medical centers that are operated with some form of physician oversight and differ from day spas in that offer medical treatments. (Skin clinics and med spas usually offer very high-end skin care along with their laser treatments.)The use of nonsurgical technology also differentiates medspas and laser clinics from traditional plastic surgery. Laser hair removal, IPL and laser treatments, Fraxel, Thermage, Botox, Restylane and other popular cosmetic treatments are usually offered.With the addition of nonsurgical technology solutions that don’t require surgery, cosmetic medicine is now being offered in a growing number of general medical practices.

* Non Surgical Facelift: Thermage, Fraxel, DeepFX & CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Non Surgical Facelift is the nomenclature that many medical technology companies, skin clinics, plastic surgeons and med spas are using to market laser and radio based skin tightening treatments like Thermage, Fraxel, ActiveFX, DeepFX, and CO2 laser resurfacing. So, what’s the difference?The non surgical facelift has been the holy grail of cosmetic medical technology. Themage, DeepFX, ActiveFX, Fraxel, laser skin tightening… all have some promise and effects but a surgical face lift will always be the most dramatic. (Of course surgical facelifts have more potential downside; scarring and that overly ’stretched’ look among them.)Non surgical facelift technologies have come a long way and there is a tremendous amount of research being conducted that goes beyond the current base of Fraxel and Thermage and into bioengineering and potentially even nano-technology that reverses the aging process on a cellular level.Thermage: Radiofrequency energy is directed just below the surface of the skin into the collagen with no surgery, injections, or incisions. The process heats and contracts the existing collagen and thereby stimulates the production of new collagen.Fraxel: Fraxel treatments use thousands of tiny beams of light to establish microscopic treatment zones that treat only a predetermined percentage of skin while leaving normal surrounding skin to help with the healing process.

* Advanced Laser Hair Removal

Advanced Laser Hair Removal? What is it?Before advanced laser hair removal devices entered the market, electrolysis was the only form of long term hair removal. Electrolysis is still performed today even though it is painful to the patient and invasive to the skin, allowing for the possibility of infection. During the electrolysis procedure, a fine needle is inserted into the hair follicle, delivering a galvanic current to destruct the stem cells in the follicle. Unfortunately, this painstaking process is performed one hair follicle at a time. Maintenance procedures are often needed for many years after the initial treatment. In contrast, with laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) technology, hundreds of hair follicles are treated at a time and vary upon the spot size (the size of the tip of the device delivering energy). These laser hair removal procedures are non-invasive and take only minutes to perform instead of the many hours with electrolysis.What is Melanin and what part does it play in advanced laser hair removal?The most important consideration prior to hair removal a procedure is the patient’s skin type and hair color. Laser hair removal is based on selective photothermolysis (using light and heat for destruction of a hair follicle) with melanin being the target chromophore (chemical grouping that produces color).
